Refund and rerouting are separate from compensation
Where UK261 applies, cancellation gives the passenger a choice between reimbursement, rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting at a later convenient date subject to seat availability. The airline should not force a voucher where a monetary refund is due.
Fixed compensation is a separate question. It depends on notice, replacement-flight timings and cause. Receiving a refund does not itself prove entitlement to the additional £520 payment.
The fourteen-day test
Passengers informed at least fourteen days before departure will not normally receive cancellation compensation under UK261. With less notice, compensation may be payable unless the replacement itinerary falls within the statutory timing exceptions or the airline proves extraordinary circumstances.
Keep the first cancellation message. Its timestamp can be as important as the flight date.

No. Route, operating carrier, disruption and arrival delay matter; passenger nationality does not determine UK261 coverage.
Do I need the flight number to start?
No. Airline, route and date are enough to begin. A flight number from the booking can strengthen verification.
